Spinosaurus (Spinosaurus – “spiny lizard”) – the heaviest predatory dinosaur

Spinosaurus lived in North Africa, from the lower Albian to lower Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous period, about 112 -97 million years ago. Spinosaurus may be the largest of all known carnivorous dinosaurs, even larger than Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus. Estimates published suggest that it had 12.6 to 18 meters (41 to 59 ft) length and 7 to 21 tonnes (7.7 to 23 short tons) weight. Spinosaurus is thought to have eaten fish. It lived both on land and in water like a modern crocodile.

Since the publication of the original version of our summary, scientific studies have verified the weight data for theropods. It turned out that the earlier vision of a spinosaurus, however, does not correspond to the truth and he was not the heaviest predatory dinosaur. So in 2020 we updated the data that we present in the form of a table at the end of the article. You will find there the most comprehensive list of theropods in the world.
