Description
Jingiella dongxingensis
Jingiella dongxingensis is an extinct genus of mamenchisaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, specifically found in the Dongxing Formation of Guangxi, China. This genus was first described in 2024 by Ren et al. and is characterized by fragmentary remains including vertebrae and limb bones.
Discovery and Naming
The holotype specimen, designated as DXJL2021001, was uncovered in the Dongxing Formation. It includes partial dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, as well as parts of both ulnae and the proximal end of the right femur. The original name proposed for this genus was “Jingia,” which was later changed to “Jingiella” due to the former being preoccupied by a moth genus established in 1983. The specific name “dongxingensis” reflects its locality in Dongxing City, where many members of the Jing Nationality reside
Classification
In phylogenetic analyses conducted by Ren et al., Jingiella is positioned as a late-diverging member of the Mamenchisauridae family. It is considered a sister taxon to other notable genera such as Mamenchisaurus youngi and Chuanjiesaurus.
